Dietes flavida, native to southern Mozambique, Eswatini and north-eastern South Africa, is an evergreen rhizomatous wild iris. It differs from D. bicolor through its strongly upright, glaucous foliage and its cream to pale yellow flowers marked with orange-brown rather than broad dark blotches. Compact in habit, it flowers in successive flushes throughout spring and summer.

Characteristics of Dietes flavida
Dietes flavida forms a rhizomatous clump of long, narrow, lance-shaped and glaucous leaves arranged in strongly upright fans. Its branched stems successively bear flowers approximately 5 to 7 cm across, ranging from cream to pale yellow and marked with orange-brown nectar guides. Each flower remains open for less than a day, but new buds provide intermittent flowering over several months. The species also differs from Dietes iridioides through its yellow flowers and smooth-walled, pendulous seed capsules. Its foliage remains evergreen where frosts are light and short-lived.
How to use Dietes flavida?
Dietes flavida is suitable for open-ground cultivation in coastal gardens and areas with mild winters. Its architectural foliage works well in borders, broad edging schemes, beneath deciduous trees and in repeated plantings along paths. When planted in groups, it gradually forms a consistent mass while retaining a more compact silhouette than several other Dietes species. Its rhizomatous root system can also help bind the upper layer of soil on banks. In colder regions, grow it in a large container that can be moved into a cold greenhouse or a bright, frost-free area during winter.
How to grow Dietes flavida successfully?
Plant Dietes flavida in spring, in full sun or light shade, in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Space plants approximately 60 to 70 cm apart. Water regularly during establishment and throughout dry summer periods, without allowing water to collect around the rhizomes. Incorporate mature compost at planting, then apply a moderate additional amount in spring. Remove dry leaves and cut back flower stems once flowering has completely finished. Divide overcrowded clumps in autumn or early spring. Below –7°C, protect the crown or overwinter container-grown plants in frost-free conditions.
