Characteristics of Miscanthus sinensis Red Tower®

Native to East Asia, Miscanthus sinensis Red Tower® is a tall ornamental grass selected for its exceptional autumn colour and strong vertical structure. Reaching up to 2 metres in height, it produces long, slender leaves that transition from green to intense red in late season. Its silver-pink flower plumes appear in late summer and persist into winter, adding visual interest even after the foliage fades. The plant’s robust growth habit, high wind resistance, and strong frost tolerance make it a reliable choice for professional landscaping in various climates.

How to use Miscanthus sinensis Red Tower® ?

Due to its height and architectural form, Miscanthus sinensis Red Tower® is ideal for creating vertical accents in landscape designs. It can be planted as a focal point in mixed borders, as a seasonal privacy screen, or in large containers for terrace decoration. In mass plantings, it produces an impressive natural curtain effect. Its seasonal colour change, from green to vibrant red, enhances autumn displays, while its persistent plumes provide winter structure. It is also suitable for low-maintenance public green spaces, where it can contribute both texture and movement to the planting scheme.

Cultivation tips for Miscanthus sinensis Red Tower®

For optimal growth, plant Miscanthus sinensis Red Tower® in fertile, well-drained soil with full sun exposure. Spacing should be approximately 1 metre between plants to allow for mature spread. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots, then reduce irrigation as the plant is drought-tolerant once established. No frequent fertilisation is required, but an annual compost application in spring supports strong growth. In late winter, cut back old stems to 10–15 cm above the ground to encourage fresh shoots. Avoid waterlogged soils, which can reduce vigour and longevity.
