Characteristics of Phillyrea latifolia

A member of the Oleaceae family and closely related to the olive tree, Phillyrea latifolia is a quintessential Mediterranean species. It forms a dense, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree, reaching up to 5 metres when mature. Its glossy, dark green evergreen leaves are highly resistant to drought, wind, and salt spray. In spring, it produces small, creamy white, nectar-rich flowers that attract pollinators. Exceptionally tolerant of dry, rocky, or calcareous soils, it thrives in tough conditions.

How to use Phillyrea latifolia ?

Thanks to its structural form and resilience, Phillyrea latifolia is ideally suited for evergreen hedging—either formal or naturalistic. It also works well as a background shrub in dry borders or as a stand-alone specimen in Mediterranean or contemporary garden designs. It can be pruned into topiary forms for structured landscapes. In urban settings, it is valued for its pollution tolerance and low maintenance needs.

Growing tips for Phillyrea latifolia ?

Plant Phillyrea latifolia in spring or autumn in well-drained soil, including poor, stony, or chalky substrates. For hedging, space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart. Irrigation is only necessary during establishment and extended droughts. Annual pruning after flowering or in late winter helps maintain a dense shape. No fertilization is required under normal soil conditions. Its moderate growth rate ensures easy long-term management.
