Characteristics of Blechnum spicant

Blechnum spicant is a slow-growing, evergreen fern adapted to cool, acidic woodland environments. It features two types of leathery fronds: sterile fronds that radiate horizontally in a basal rosette, and fertile fronds that rise vertically from the center. This contrast creates a bold, sculptural effect that remains attractive throughout the year. Hardy to -25°C, it is well-suited to temperate regions with consistently moist, humus-rich soils and thrives under shaded or semi-shaded conditions.

How to use Blechnum spicant ?

Blechnum spicant is perfect for naturalistic shade gardens, woodland borders, and moist rock gardens. Its persistent, glossy foliage provides structure and groundcover in low-light areas, especially beneath deciduous or evergreen trees. It also performs well in shaded containers, offering texture and visual interest year-round. This fern pairs harmoniously with ericaceous plants such as pieris, hostas, and Japanese maples, contributing to refined, long-lasting compositions in acid soils.

Best practices for growing Blechnum spicant ?

To ensure optimal growth, plant Blechnum spicant in acidic to neutral, humus-rich, well-drained but consistently moist soil. Planting is best done in spring or autumn, with a spacing of 40 cm between specimens. It prefers full to partial shade and should be protected from direct sun, particularly in summer. Water regularly during dry spells. Pruning is limited to removing damaged or old fronds. Apply an annual mulch of organic matter to retain moisture and enrich the soil.
