Native to the Himalayas and China, Allium tuberosum, commonly known as garlic chives or Chinese chives, is an aromatic perennial forming dense clumps of flat leaves with a mild garlic flavour. Unlike common chives, it produces decorative, pollinator-friendly white flowers late in the season. Its foliage can be harvested regularly from spring to autumn and regrows quickly after cutting.

Characteristics of Allium tuberosum
Allium tuberosum is a bulbous perennial that gradually develops into a compact clump of linear, flat and fleshy leaves. This foliage is its main distinguishing feature compared with common chives, which have cylindrical, hollow leaves. Its flavour combines notes of chives and garlic while remaining milder than garlic cloves. In late summer, rigid flower stalks bear umbels composed of small, star-shaped white flowers. The plant becomes dormant during winter before producing new growth in spring. Hardy and attractive to pollinators, it provides both culinary and ornamental value.
How to use Allium tuberosum ?
Garlic chives are suitable for vegetable gardens, herb gardens, culinary plant beds and perennial vegetable collections. They can be grown in rows, along the edges of vegetable beds or in combination with other aromatic plants. Their late white flowering also makes them suitable for edible borders, naturalistic planting schemes and rock gardens. Container cultivation is possible, provided the pot is sufficiently large and has good drainage. The fresh leaves can be finely chopped and added to salads, sauces and cooked dishes. The flower buds and flowers are also edible and highly attractive to pollinating insects.
How to grow Allium tuberosum successfully ?
Plant Allium tuberosum in full sun or partial shade, in fertile, loose, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Space plants 25 to 30 cm apart to allow the clumps to develop fully. Water regularly after planting, then maintain moderate soil moisture during active growth and after each harvest. Hoe shallowly to control weeds without damaging the bulbs. An application of well-rotted compost in spring will support foliage production. Cut the leaves back to a few centimetres above ground level to encourage fresh growth. Remove faded flower heads before seeds develop to limit self-seeding, and divide overcrowded clumps when necessary.
