Characteristics of Amelanchier alnifolia ‘Saskadwarf’®
This cultivar forms a finely branched shrub that is almost as wide as it is tall, reaching only around 30–40% of the size of a standard serviceberry. Its deciduous foliage is green during the growing season before turning orange to red in autumn. The dense clusters of white flowers appear mainly in April. Self-fertile, the plant can produce fruit without an additional pollinating cultivar. The small blue-purple berries ripen from late June. Smaller and more elongated than those of many fruiting cultivars, they are distinguished by their high sugar content and pronounced flavour, with notes reminiscent of almond and ripe cherry.
How to use Amelanchier alnifolia ‘Saskadwarf’®?
Thanks to its compact growth, this serviceberry is suitable for small gardens, shrub borders and the front of edible planting schemes. It can be grown as a specimen, planted in groups or incorporated into a low fruiting hedge alongside redcurrants, blackcurrants and other soft-fruit shrubs. Its dense habit, spring blossom and autumn colour also make it suitable for mixed perennial borders. Container cultivation is possible, provided that a pot of at least 30 litres with effective drainage is used. Its limited height does not make it suitable for creating a tall privacy screen, but it can structure a terrace or define different garden areas.
What are the recommended cultivation practices for Amelanchier alnifolia ‘Saskadwarf’®?
Plant this serviceberry in sun or partial shade, in well-worked, free-draining soil without persistent waterlogging. It tolerates light to heavy soils and a broad pH range, although very calcareous soils may require the addition of a slightly acidic growing medium. Allow approximately 1.10–1.20 m between plants. Water regularly during the first two growing seasons, then irrigate during extended dry periods. Container-grown plants require more frequent monitoring. Keep the soil surface clear with shallow hoeing. Apply a layer of well-rotted compost in late winter or use a controlled-release fertiliser for container cultivation. Avoid pruning during the first three years, then remove one or two older branches at ground level each winter.
