AMELANCHIER alnifolia Saskalate ®

Native to North America, Amelanchier alnifolia Saskalate® is a vigorous fruiting Saskatoon berry selected for its narrow, upright habit, exceptionally long fruit clusters and late ripening season. Its large, sweet, low-acid, bluish-purple berries extend the harvesting period. Its vertical silhouette sets it apart from more spreading cultivars and makes it especially suitable for productive hedges.

Characteristics of Amelanchier alnifolia Saskalate®

Amelanchier alnifolia Saskalate® forms a dense, well-branched shrub with a distinctly more upright habit than many fruiting Saskatoon cultivars. It reaches an average height of 3.5 m and a width of approximately 1.9 m. Its white flowers appear before or at the same time as leaf emergence. They are followed by very long clusters of large, round, bluish-purple berries with a light bloom. At full ripeness, the fruit becomes very sweet, with flavours reminiscent of black cherry and almond. This late cultivar is harvested mainly in early July. In autumn, the foliage develops yellow, orange or red tones.

How to use Amelanchier alnifolia Saskalate®

Thanks to its narrow, upright habit, Saskalate® is particularly well suited to fruiting hedges, planted screens and productive rows. It can also be grown as a specimen shrub, in groups, in diversified orchards or within edible planting schemes. A spacing of approximately 1 m between plants is suitable for creating a dense hedge. The berries can be eaten fresh or used in jams, compotes, pastries, chutneys and frozen preparations. Combining Saskalate® with earlier cultivars helps extend the Saskatoon berry harvest over several weeks. Protection against birds may be required as the fruit approaches maturity.

How to grow Amelanchier alnifolia Saskalate® successfully

Plant Saskalate® in full sun or partial shade, in deep, fertile and well-drained soil. The species prefers moisture-retentive soils, but this cultivar adapts well to a range of soil textures and tolerates neutral to moderately calcareous conditions. Allow approximately 1 m between plants in a hedge and around 2 m for free-standing specimens. Water regularly during the first two years and throughout fruit development. Maintain an organic mulch and apply mature compost in spring. Pruning requirements are limited: from the fourth year onwards, occasionally remove old or overly thick branches to maintain an open, productive framework.
