ANEMONE Pamina fleurs - Pépinière La Forêt

ANEMONE Pamina

Anemone hupehensis ‘Pamina’, derived from a species native to China, is a compact, double-flowered Japanese anemone. Shorter than many traditional cultivars, it forms a clump approximately 80 cm high and produces carmine-pink flowers composed of numerous narrow tepals from August to October. Its dense flowering habit makes it particularly suitable for smaller perennial borders.

The stated dimensions represent an average mature size. Plant vigour and flower-stem height may vary according to water availability and soil fertility.

Characteristics of Anemone hupehensis ‘Pamina’

This herbaceous perennial forms a clump of dark green, deciduous leaves with toothed, deeply divided margins. Its upright, branched flower stems reach approximately 80 cm in height. They carry double flowers around 5 cm in diameter, composed of numerous narrow, deep pink to carmine-pink tepals arranged around golden-yellow stamens. This fuller flower structure distinguishes ‘Pamina’ from single-flowered Japanese anemones. Flowering occurs mainly from August to October. The above-ground growth disappears during winter, while the underground suckering root system emerges again in spring and gradually expands once the plant is established.

How to use Anemone hupehensis ‘Pamina’?

Thanks to its moderate height, ‘Pamina’ is suitable for the front or middle of perennial borders, cool woodland edges, bright woodland gardens and naturalistic planting schemes. It may be planted individually or in groups of three to five specimens to create a stronger flowering display. Its carmine-pink flowers combine well with ferns, astilbes, heucheras, hostas and ornamental grasses suited to moisture-retentive soils. Container cultivation is possible in a wide, well-drained pot, although its suckering root system develops more freely in open ground. The flower stems may also be used in fresh floral arrangements.

What are the recommended cultivation practices for Anemone hupehensis ‘Pamina’?

Plant in spring or autumn in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive and well-drained soil. Bright partial shade helps maintain more consistent soil moisture, while full sun is suitable where the soil does not dry out excessively. Allow 45–50 cm between plants, equivalent to approximately four plants per square metre. Loosen the soil deeply and incorporate mature compost before planting. Water regularly during establishment and throughout prolonged dry periods, without allowing the soil to remain waterlogged in winter. Apply compost in spring. Remove faded flower stems, then clear away dry foliage in late winter. Avoid moving the plant once it is established.
