COREOPSIS verticillata Ruby Red

Coreopsis verticillata ‘Ruby Red’, a cultivated selection derived from a species native to North America, is a compact threadleaf coreopsis distinguished from the more common yellow-flowered varieties by its ruby-red flower heads. Its very fine, dark green foliage forms a light, airy clump measuring approximately 50 × 40 cm. Its extended flowering period, from June to October, makes it particularly suitable for sunny landscaping schemes and container displays.

Characteristics of Coreopsis verticillata ‘Ruby Red’

‘Ruby Red’ threadleaf coreopsis develops a rounded clump composed of numerous fine, upright stems. Its deciduous foliage is deeply divided into narrow, linear segments, giving the plant a light texture that contrasts effectively with broad-leaved plants. The single flower heads are held above the foliage and display an unusual ruby-red colour within the genus. The plant performs best in full sun but tolerates light partial shade in well-drained soil. Rated H5 by the RHS, it can withstand temperatures close to −15°C, provided that winter drainage is satisfactory.

How to use Coreopsis verticillata ‘Ruby Red’

With its moderate dimensions, ‘Ruby Red’ is suitable for the front or middle of perennial borders, edging, rock gardens and sunny banks. Its red flowers create strong contrasts with yellow-, white- or blue-flowering perennials, as well as with grasses featuring flexible foliage. A planting density of approximately four plants per square metre produces a clear, balanced display without excessive crowding. This variety is also suitable for pots and containers, provided that a free-draining growing medium and a container with drainage holes are used. Its flowering stems may also be cut for summer bouquets.

How to grow Coreopsis verticillata ‘Ruby Red’ successfully

Plant in spring or early autumn in loose, free-draining soil that does not remain waterlogged. Allow 45 to 50 cm between plants. In compacted ground, loosen the soil thoroughly and incorporate drainage material into the planting area. Water regularly during establishment, then provide additional irrigation during prolonged dry periods. Remove faded flower heads to encourage the formation of new buds, and cut back the dry stems at the end of winter. A light application of fertiliser in spring is generally sufficient; excessive nitrogen encourages foliage growth at the expense of plant strength and flowering.
