Characteristics of Coreopsis ‘Ruby Frost’®
Coreopsis ‘Ruby Frost’® forms a dense clump composed of numerous ascending stems and finely divided green leaves. Its single flower heads, approximately 5.5 cm in diameter, have purplish-red to ruby-red ray florets finished with a clearly defined white margin around a yellow-orange central disc. This colouring distinguishes it from its parent ‘Rum Punch’ and from ‘Cranberry Ice’, whose white edging is less regular. The foliage dies back during winter dormancy. The cultivar may be susceptible to powdery mildew, so an open, well-ventilated position and avoiding overhead watering help reduce conditions favourable to its development.
How to use Coreopsis ‘Ruby Frost’®?
Coreopsis ‘Ruby Frost’® is suitable for the front or middle of borders, broad edging schemes, gravel gardens and sunny perennial plantings. Its spreading habit allows it to create a substantial floral display with a limited number of plants. It combines well with compact ornamental grasses, yarrows, sages, gauras and coneflowers that also prefer free-draining soil. It is suitable for cultivation in a large container, provided that the pot has drainage holes and is sufficiently stable. The stems can also be harvested for cut flowers. In cold or wet regions, container cultivation makes it easier to overwinter the plant under unheated cover.
How to grow Coreopsis ‘Ruby Frost’® successfully?
Plant in spring, in full sun and in ordinary, loose, well-drained soil. Due to its spreading habit, allow approximately 70 cm between plants. Position the crown level with the soil surface, then water regularly during establishment without keeping the ground saturated. Once established, water mainly during prolonged dry periods. A moderate application of mature compost in spring is generally sufficient; excessive nitrogen encourages foliage growth and may produce softer stems. Remove faded flower heads weekly or trim the clump after the first flush of flowers. Cut back dry stems in late winter and divide ageing clumps in spring.
