Zanthoxylum coreanum, native to East Asia and particularly associated with Korea, is a vigorous deciduous shrub or small tree in the Rutaceae family. Commonly known as Korean pepper, it stands out for its aromatic compound foliage, conspicuous thorns and decorative reddish fruits. Compared with Zanthoxylum simulans, it is generally less thorny and can be distinguished by its non-winged leaf rachis.

Characteristics of Zanthoxylum coreanum
Zanthoxylum coreanum is a fast-growing woody plant with a naturally spreading, bushy habit, reaching around 4 m at maturity. Its branches bear prominent thorns, while its compound deciduous leaves consist of several glossy green leaflets. The foliage is aromatic when crushed and turns yellow in autumn. Small, discreet flowers appear in late spring, generally from May to June, followed by clusters of reddish fruits. These characteristics provide ornamental interest well beyond the flowering period. The plant is notably hardy, tolerating temperatures down to approximately -20 °C in suitable growing conditions, although young shoots can remain vulnerable to late spring frosts.
How to use Zanthoxylum coreanum?
With its vigorous growth, spreading structure and thorny branches, Zanthoxylum coreanum is suitable for planting as a specimen shrub, in mixed shrub borders or within an informal hedge. Its thorns also make it particularly useful where a dense, defensive hedge is required. Allow sufficient space for its mature dimensions and avoid positioning it immediately alongside frequently used paths or narrow access points. Its aromatic foliage, autumn colour and reddish fruiting provide several successive ornamental features during the growing season. It can also be trained and pruned to maintain a more compact, structured form where available garden space is limited.
What are the best cultivation practices for Zanthoxylum coreanum?
Plant Zanthoxylum coreanum in full sun or partial shade, preferably in deep, fertile, well-drained soil that retains some moisture during the growing season. Dense shade and prolonged drought are less suitable. For hedge planting, spacing of approximately 1.5 to 2 m allows each plant sufficient room to develop. Water regularly during establishment and during prolonged dry periods, particularly in the first few years. Heavy or waterlogged soils should be improved to facilitate drainage. Pruning is best limited to removing dead, damaged or poorly positioned branches and controlling overall size. An annual application of mature compost or a balanced fertiliser can support growth where soil fertility is limited.
