Characteristics of Tulbaghia Purple Eye®
Tulbaghia Purple Eye® is a rhizomatous perennial that gradually forms a dense clump of narrow, linear green leaves. Like other Tulbaghia, its foliage releases a characteristic garlic-like scent when crushed. Slender flower stems rise above the foliage and carry umbels of small, star-shaped flowers. Purple Eye® is distinguished by the contrast between its pale mauve petals and the deeper purple centre. Flowering mainly extends from June to October when growing conditions are favourable. The foliage may remain present through winter in mild climates, although it can be partially damaged by severe frost.
How to use Tulbaghia Purple Eye®?
Thanks to its compact growth and light flower stems, Tulbaghia Purple Eye® is well suited to sunny borders, rock gardens, the front of perennial beds and gravel gardens. Its fine silhouette combines easily with grasses and other perennials adapted to well-drained soils. It also performs particularly well in pots and containers, which makes winter protection easier in colder regions. Planted in groups, it produces a denser flowering effect while retaining a light overall appearance. It can also be positioned along terraces or pathways, taking into account the garlic-like scent of the foliage when handled.
What are the best cultivation practices for Tulbaghia Purple Eye®?
Plant Tulbaghia Purple Eye® in full sun, in loose, fertile and especially well-drained soil. Allow approximately 25 to 30 cm between plants so that the clumps can develop without excessive competition. Water regularly during the establishment phase, then reduce irrigation once the plants are well rooted, while avoiding prolonged drought during flowering. Container-grown plants require closer monitoring of substrate moisture. Remove faded flower stems regularly and clean away damaged foliage at the end of winter. A moderate application of compost or balanced fertiliser in spring can support new growth. Avoid waterlogged conditions in winter.
