Sambucus nigra Cherry Lace® forms a well-branched shrub reaching around 1.5 m in height and spread, making it noticeably more compact than many other black elder cultivars. Its main distinguishing feature is its finely dissected foliage: reddish when emerging, then developing cherry-red to dark purple tones with a light, highly decorative texture. In May and June, flat clusters of cherry-pink to paler pink flowers appear and stand out clearly against the dark foliage. Deciduous and hardy to around -20°C, this shrub performs well in both sun and partial shade.

Thanks to its moderate size, Sambucus nigra Cherry Lace® is easy to integrate into shrub borders, informal hedges and mixed landscape plantings, or to use as a specimen shrub. Its compact habit also makes it suitable for growing in a large container, provided that sufficient substrate volume and regular watering are maintained. Its dark, finely cut foliage creates an effective contrast with green, golden or grey-leaved plants. It is particularly useful in planting schemes where a purple-leaved shrub is required without the larger dimensions of more vigorous elder cultivars. What are the cultivation tips for Sambucus nigra Cherry Lace®?
Plant Sambucus nigra Cherry Lace® in sun or partial shade, in deep, fertile and well-drained soil. For group planting or informal hedging, allow approximately 1.2 to 1.5 m between plants, depending on the desired effect. Water regularly during the first growing seasons to encourage good root establishment. Once established, the shrub can tolerate short periods of drier conditions. Well-decomposed organic matter can be incorporated into the soil at planting. In late winter, remove older branches when necessary and shorten selected young shoots to maintain a dense framework and encourage renewed branching.
