COREOPSIS Nova Jewel ®

Coreopsis NOVA® ‘Jewel’ is a horticultural hybrid perennial originating from American breeding by Terra Nova Nurseries. It stands out from traditional yellow coreopsis thanks to its bicoloured flowers, with a pale yellow centre extending into creamy petals edged with lilac, the colour becoming more pronounced as the blooms mature. Its compact, cushion-forming habit and improved resistance to powdery mildew further enhance its value for sunny plantings.

Characteristics of Coreopsis NOVA® ‘Jewel’

Coreopsis NOVA® ‘Jewel’ forms a low, neat and compact clump, reaching approximately 30 cm in height and 35 cm in width. Its green foliage provides an effective backdrop for its long summer flowering period. The flower heads display an unusual colour combination for coreopsis: the pale yellow centre blends into creamy tones, then lilac along the petal margins, with the lilac becoming more intense as the flowers age. This selection has also been bred for improved resistance to powdery mildew. The flowers are visited by bees and other pollinating insects during the flowering period.

How to use Coreopsis NOVA® ‘Jewel’?

Thanks to its compact growth, Coreopsis NOVA® ‘Jewel’ is particularly suitable for the front of borders, edging and group plantings. Its bicoloured flowers combine well with blue-, purple- or white-flowering perennials, as well as with low-growing ornamental grasses. It can also be grown in pots or used in mixed container displays, provided it receives sufficient sunlight. In landscape schemes, repeated planting can create uniform flowering drifts while maintaining a low overall height. The breeder also recommends it for borders, mass plantings, accent planting and containers.

What are the best cultivation tips for Coreopsis NOVA® ‘Jewel’?

Plant Coreopsis NOVA® ‘Jewel’ in full sun and in well-drained soil, avoiding locations that remain waterlogged for long periods. A spacing of approximately 35 to 40 cm between plants allows for its mature spread. Water regularly after planting while the root system becomes established, then adjust irrigation according to rainfall and soil moisture. Plants grown in containers require closer monitoring of substrate moisture. Removing faded flowers helps maintain a tidy appearance, while dry stems and foliage can be cut back at the end of winter. A moderate application of mature compost or a suitable perennial fertiliser in spring is generally sufficient in adequately fertile soil.
