This beautyberry develops an upright framework composed of numerous, relatively closely spaced branches. Its oval, toothed leaves are green during the growing season before turning yellow, orange or red prior to leaf fall. In June and July, small lilac flowers appear in clusters in the leaf axils. They are followed, mainly in October and November, by dense clusters of numerous purple berries. This large and abundant fruiting display is the main distinguishing feature of ‘Kolmapurgi’. The berries remain visible after the leaves have fallen, highlighting the structure of the branches.

This shrub is suitable for mixed borders, informal hedges, woodland edges and specimen planting. Its upright habit allows it to be positioned towards the middle or back of a planting scheme without occupying as much space as a broadly spreading shrub. Combine it with spring- or summer-flowering plants to extend seasonal interest into autumn and winter. Berry-laden stems may be cut for floral arrangements.
