DELOSPERMA cooperi Fire Wonder ®

Delosperma cooperi FIRE WONDER® ‘WOWDAY2’, a cultivar bred in Japan from a species native to South Africa, is a mat-forming perennial ice plant. It is distinguished by its large, two-tone orange-red flowers with yellow centres, which are broader than those of many other Delosperma cultivars, as well as by its extended flowering period and compact growth, suited to dry, sharply drained soils.

Characteristics of Delosperma cooperi FIRE WONDER® ‘WOWDAY2’

This perennial ice plant forms a low-growing mat of horizontal, branching stems. Its narrow, cylindrical and fleshy leaves temporarily store water, enabling established plants to withstand dry periods. The single, daisy-like flowers have orange-red petals that become yellow towards the centre. They can reach approximately 3 to 5 cm in diameter and open mainly in bright light. The foliage generally remains evergreen, although it may be partially damaged by cold conditions. Winter survival depends greatly on efficient drainage and the absence of stagnant moisture around the roots.

How to use Delosperma cooperi FIRE WONDER® ‘WOWDAY2’

FIRE WONDER® is suitable for rock gardens, walls, banks, edging and the front of sunny borders. Its spreading growth also allows it to cover gaps between stones or trail over masonry. In pots, troughs and window boxes, its two-tone flowers provide strong colour for several months, provided that the container has adequate drainage holes. It can be combined with sedums, thymes, low-growing grasses and other perennials adapted to free-draining ground. Allow three to four plants per square metre, corresponding to an average spacing of 45 to 50 cm between plants.

How to grow Delosperma cooperi FIRE WONDER® ‘WOWDAY2’ successfully

Plant in spring in light, poor to moderately fertile and sharply drained soil. In clay ground, create a raised planting area and incorporate coarse mineral material to improve water movement. Position the top of the root ball level with the soil surface and space plants 45 to 50 cm apart. Water after planting, then regularly but moderately during establishment. Once established, restrict watering to prolonged dry periods. Rich soil amendments and heavy nitrogen fertilisation are unnecessary. Remove dry or damaged growth in spring without cutting back severely. In containers, protect the root ball from persistent winter rainfall and prevent water from collecting around the roots.
