Plant description
Dianella tasmanica Silver Fox®, also known as “New Zealand variegated flax,” is a particularly ornamental evergreen perennial. It forms a dense, flared clump 60 to 80 cm high and equally wide. Its long linear leaves, light green with wide creamy white margins, add a beautiful touch of light to flower beds and pots. Its discreet but elegant flowering occurs between May and July : small blue-violet star-shaped flowers, followed by very decorative metallic blue berries. Hardiness down to -8°C. Silver Fox® stands out from other Dianella varieties thanks to its light, very stable variegation and compact growth. Ideal for contemporary gardens or seaside locations thanks to its moderate resistance to sea spray.
Uses in the garden and in pots
Highly versatile, Dianella tasmanica Silver Fox® is equally at home in the ground or in pots. It structures borders and punctuates flowerbeds or rockeries with its supple tufted habit and graphic foliage. Combined with grasses, lavender, or agapanthus, it creates a natural and modern atmosphere. In pots or planters, it brightens up terraces and balconies, even in partial shade, and tolerates urban conditions well. Perfect as ground cover in dry gardens or contemporary gardens, it can also be used as a plant carpet under shrubs. Its simple, elegant silhouette suits both modern designs and Mediterranean scenes.
Planting and care tips
Silver Fox® should be planted in spring or fall in well-drained, fairly poor to moderately fertile soil. It prefers sunny or partially shaded locations. The recommended planting distance is 40 to 50 cm between plants. Watering should be moderate : once established, it tolerates drought well. No major soil preparation is required. A light application of compost in spring is sufficient to stimulate growth. Pruning is not essential, but it is advisable to remove damaged leaves at the end of winter to maintain a beautiful shape. Disease-resistant and undemanding, it requires little maintenance. Mulch at the base in cold regions to protect the stump.
Origin of the plant
Dianella tasmanica is native to southeastern Australia and Tasmania.
