Characteristics of Echinacea purpurea DELIGHTFUL™ ‘Sangria’
Echinacea purpurea DELIGHTFUL™ ‘Sangria’ forms a dense clump that branches from the base and bears narrow, pointed green leaves. Its upright stems reach approximately 30 cm when in flower. The double, anemone-type flower heads initially display a very dark burgundy centre before gradually developing a more consistent wine-red colour. This changing colour and the high number of flowers produced per stem enhance its ornamental value. Unlike traditional coneflowers, which can exceed 80 cm, this selection maintains a low, regular silhouette. The foliage dies back during winter dormancy before regrowing from the crown in spring.
How to use Echinacea purpurea DELIGHTFUL™ ‘Sangria’?
Thanks to its compact growth, Echinacea purpurea DELIGHTFUL™ ‘Sangria’ is particularly suitable for summer containers, deep window boxes and planting schemes designed for sunny terraces. In open ground, it can be positioned at the front of borders, along edging or in repeated plantings to create a consistent mass of colour. It combines well with sedums, agastaches, coreopsis and compact ornamental grasses that also prefer bright positions and well-drained soils. Its flowering stems can be cut for small bouquets. Its deciduous foliage and limited height make it unsuitable for hedging or screening.
How to grow Echinacea purpurea DELIGHTFUL™ ‘Sangria’ successfully?
Plant in full sun, in ordinary, loose and well-drained soil, preferably with a slightly mineral structure. Position the crown level with the soil surface without burying it, as planting too deeply may cause the crown to deteriorate. Space plants approximately 30 cm apart. Water after planting, then regularly during establishment, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid soils that remain saturated, particularly during winter. Incorporate a moderate amount of mature compost in spring; excessive nitrogen fertilisation is unnecessary. Remove faded flowers progressively and cut back dry stems in late winter. Division can be carried out in spring when the clump becomes dense.
