Lagerstroemia indica PINK VELOUR® ‘Whit III’ develops an upright, broadly branched habit and can be grown either as a large shrub or a small tree depending on training. Its main distinguishing feature is its foliage: burgundy red when emerging, becoming green tinged with purple in summer, then developing orange to reddish-brown shades in autumn. From July to September, large terminal panicles carry magenta-pink flowers with characteristically crinkled petals. The grey-brown bark gradually exfoliates with age. This cultivar also shows very good resistance to powdery mildew, although disease occurrence cannot be completely excluded under favourable conditions.

In regions where winter conditions do not cause significant damage to the above-ground growth, it is also suitable for informal hedges and screening. Its natural branching makes it well suited to multi-stem cultivation, which highlights the ornamental bark, or it can be trained as a small tree through formative pruning. Container growing is also possible in a large pot, provided irrigation and fertilisation are carefully managed.
