Characteristics of Mahonia eurybracteata Meteor®

Belonging to the Berberidaceae family, Mahonia eurybracteata Meteor® offers a distinctive, fine-textured, evergreen foliage free of spines—uncommon among mahonias. New leaves emerge in vivid red to purple shades, gradually turning to a rich dark green, offering striking seasonal contrast. This cultivar features an upright, rounded structure and late-season fragrant yellow flowers, making it a valuable addition to planting schemes where pollinator support and ornamental performance are key. Selected for its resilience, ease of maintenance, and ornamental versatility, it thrives in moist, well-drained soils with good shade tolerance.

How to use Mahonia eurybracteata Meteor® ?

Meteor® shrub is highly adaptable to various landscape uses: mixed borders, architectural beds, large containers, and low informal screens. Due to its compact, soft-textured form and lack of spines, it suits high-traffic areas like patios or urban courtyards. Its autumnal bloom window adds value when most other species are dormant. Well suited for shade gardens, it pairs harmoniously with ferns, grasses, and woodland perennials, adding structure and seasonal interest in professional planting schemes. It also performs excellently as a standalone specimen or grouped in naturalistic plantings.

How to grow Mahonia eurybracteata Meteor® successfully ?

For optimal establishment, plant Mahonia eurybracteata Meteor® in fertile, moist yet well-drained soils, preferably neutral to slightly acidic. It prefers dappled light to partial shade, which enhances the coloration of new foliage and encourages flowering. Maintain a planting distance of 1.0–1.5 m to ensure balanced development. Apply organic mulch and a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring. Water regularly after planting until fully established. Pruning is generally unnecessary, but light shaping can be done post-flowering to preserve the shrub’s natural form. This low-maintenance variety suits professional landscapes aiming for multi-season impact and minimal intervention.
