Characteristics of Stipa ichu
Stipa ichu is a perennial grass in the Poaceae family, forming a dense, upright clump of narrow, fine, bright green leaves. In summer, long arching flower stems rise above the foliage and carry feathery silver panicles that gradually turn white as they dry. The plant generally reaches around 90 cm in height and approximately 40 cm in width. Its foliage dries back in winter, while the inflorescences may remain decorative for longer. The species is hardy to approximately -10 °C in suitable growing conditions.
How to use Stipa ichu?
Stipa ichu is particularly suitable for gravel gardens, grass borders, rock gardens and prairie-style planting schemes. Its vertical habit and flexible inflorescences add movement without creating excessive bulk. It can be planted in groups for a stronger architectural effect or combined with full-sun perennials adapted to well-drained soils. Its more compact size compared with Stipa pseudoichu, which can exceed 1.5 m, makes it easier to use along borders or in smaller planting areas. It can also be grown in a sufficiently deep container with excellent drainage.
What are the best cultivation practices for Stipa ichu?
Plant Stipa ichu in full sun, in light to moderately fertile, well-drained soil. The species adapts to calcareous, loamy or sandy soils and tolerates a range of pH conditions. Allow approximately 35 to 45 cm between plants. Water regularly after planting to encourage root establishment, then reduce irrigation once the clump is well established. Avoid heavy soils and stagnant moisture, particularly in winter. Cut back dry leaves and flower stems in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Dividing established clumps every few years can help maintain vigour.
