Characteristics of Delosperma hybrida Ocean Sunset® Violet
Delosperma hybrida Ocean Sunset® Violet forms a dense, well-branched mat approximately 12 cm high and 28 cm wide. Its main varietal feature is the size of its flowers: the Ocean Sunset® series was selected for particularly large blooms. In ‘T1854’, the flowers are an intense violet-magenta with a golden-yellow centre and open widely in strong light. Flowering mainly extends from May to September. The succulent green foliage is semi-evergreen, depending on winter conditions, and forms a low-growing carpet. Effective soil drainage remains essential for maintaining good cold tolerance.
How to use Delosperma hybrida Ocean Sunset® Violet?
The compact growth of Delosperma hybrida Ocean Sunset® Violet makes it well suited to rock gardens, borders, slopes and the front of sunny mixed beds. Its creeping habit also allows it to be planted at the top of low walls or between mineral elements. The variety is particularly suitable for pots, window boxes, troughs or hanging containers, where its large flowers can be appreciated at close range. It combines well with sedums, sempervivums and other low-growing perennials that prefer well-drained substrates. Repeated planting can gradually create a low carpet highlighted by vivid violet-magenta flowers.
What are the best cultivation tips for Delosperma hybrida Ocean Sunset® Violet?
Plant Delosperma hybrida Ocean Sunset® Violet in full sun, in light, sandy or stony soil with excellent drainage. A spacing of approximately 30 cm between plants is suitable for its mature development. In heavy soils, improve the structure with mineral material to help excess water drain away, particularly in winter. Water after planting and during the establishment phase. Once well rooted, this Delosperma can tolerate dry periods, although occasional watering remains useful during prolonged drought. In containers, allow the substrate to dry between waterings. Pruning is generally limited to removing dry or damaged growth in spring.
