Achillea × kellereri, a natural hybrid originating from the mountain regions of Central Europe, the Alps and the Balkans, is a compact perennial commonly known as Kellerer’s yarrow. It differs from taller yarrows through its low, regular cushion-shaped habit and exceptionally bright silver-grey foliage, which becomes almost white in summer. Characteristics of Achillea × kellereri
Achillea × kellereri is a compact perennial of the Asteraceae family, forming a regular cushion approximately 25 cm high and wide. Its narrow, finely divided leaves are covered with soft silvery hairs, creating highly luminous foliage throughout the year. Under hot, dry summer conditions, the leaves become almost white. From April to May, short stems rise above the foliage and carry flat clusters of small white flower heads with cream-yellow centres. Unlike many vigorous yarrows, this hybrid spreads slowly through short stolons and is not invasive. It combines strong drought resistance with excellent winter hardiness, provided the soil remains well drained.
How to use Achillea × kellereri?
Achillea × kellereri is particularly suitable for rock gardens, gravel gardens, dry borders, retaining walls and sunny slopes. Its compact habit also makes it effective as a low edging plant or non-invasive ground cover. The silver foliage provides year-round structure and contrasts well with dark-leaved or strongly coloured perennials. It may be combined with dwarf Teucrium, Thymus, Artemisia, Erigeron, Nepeta or low-growing hardy geraniums. Container cultivation is also possible, provided drainage is excellent. Its tolerance of poor soils, limestone and summer drought makes it especially valuable for Mediterranean-style landscaping, xerophytic planting schemes and low-maintenance urban developments.
What advice ensures successful cultivation of Achillea × kellereri?
Plant Achillea × kellereri in spring or autumn, in full sun and in poor to moderately fertile, sandy, stony or calcareous soil. Perfect drainage is essential, as the plant is highly sensitive to prolonged moisture, particularly during winter. Space plants approximately 25 to 30 cm apart, corresponding to six to nine plants per square metre. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce irrigation significantly; established plants tolerate prolonged summer drought. Avoid excessive fertilisation, which may weaken the compact habit and reduce foliage quality. Remove faded flower stems after flowering to encourage denser foliage. Weed carefully around young plants during the first two growing seasons.
