Derived from a species native to China, Anemone hupehensis Fantasy Elsa®, also known as autumn anemone, is a perennial selected for its compact, highly branched habit. Its white flowers with yellow centres are carried on short, sturdy stems. Much shorter than traditional Japanese anemones, it is particularly well suited to borders, small gardens and container cultivation.

Characteristics of Anemone hupehensis Fantasy Elsa®
Anemone hupehensis Fantasy Elsa® forms a dense clump of divided, lobed, dark green leaves. Its compact breeding limits its height to approximately 50 cm, compared with nearly 1 m for many traditional autumn anemones. From July to October, it produces single, pure white flowers that open widely around a cluster of yellow stamens. The short, firm flower stems remain upright without staking. This late flowering period, attractive to bees and butterflies, extends the ornamental value of planting schemes into autumn. The foliage dies back in winter before emerging again in spring.
How to use Anemone hupehensis Fantasy Elsa®
Thanks to its compact growth, Fantasy Elsa® is particularly suitable for the front of borders, flowering edges, cool rock gardens and small urban gardens. It can also be planted in groups to create white flowering drifts in late summer. Its compact habit makes it suitable for long-term cultivation in pots or containers on terraces, unlike more vigorous and spreading Japanese anemones. It combines effectively with low-growing grasses, heucheras, ferns, asters and hardy geraniums. The flower stems can also be cut for floral arrangements. Repeated planting strengthens its visual impact and increases its value for pollinating insects.
How to grow Anemone hupehensis Fantasy Elsa® successfully
Plant Fantasy Elsa® in gentle sun or partial shade, in humus-rich, fertile, moisture-retentive and well-drained soil. In a sunny position, regular moisture is essential during summer. Space plants 35 to 40 cm apart to allow balanced clumps to develop. Water regularly during the first year and throughout dry periods, while avoiding stagnant water around the roots. Incorporate mature compost at planting and renew this application every spring. An organic mulch helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Cut back dry stems close to ground level in late autumn or at the end of winter. Divide established clumps in spring.
