Anemone hupehensis ‘Fantasy Red Riding Hood’®, derived from an East Asian species native from Nepal to Taiwan, is a compact Japanese anemone selected for containers and front-of-border planting. Unlike taller Japanese anemones, it remains around 40 cm high while producing numerous single, deep magenta-pink flowers with prominent yellow centres from midsummer into autumn. This herbaceous perennial develops a dense clump of dark green, toothed and deeply divided leaves. Branching flower stems rise above the foliage without producing the excessive height associated with many traditional Japanese anemones. From July to October, they carry numerous single, saucer-shaped flowers composed of thick, deep magenta-pink tepals surrounding a contrasting yellow centre. The compact and uniform growth habit is a defining feature of the Fantasy series. The above-ground vegetation disappears during winter before emerging again in spring. Once established, the plant spreads gradually from its underground root system while retaining a relatively compact overall form.

Its limited height makes this cultivar suitable for the front or middle of perennial borders, shaded beds, courtyard gardens and small urban planting schemes. It combines effectively with ornamental grasses, ferns, heucheras and late-flowering perennials. Planting several specimens together creates a clearly defined flowering display from midsummer into autumn. Container cultivation is particularly appropriate because the compact stems remain well proportioned and require little support. Use a container with effective drainage and sufficient volume to maintain stable soil moisture. The flowers can also be cut for fresh arrangements. This perennial is not tall or dense enough to form a hedge or privacy screen.

Plant in spring or autumn in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moderately moist but drains freely. Partial shade is suitable, although full sun can be used where the soil stays cool and does not dry out excessively. Allow approximately 50 cm between plants. Loosen the soil deeply before planting and incorporate well-decomposed compost where organic matter is limited. Water regularly during establishment and during prolonged dry periods, particularly for container-grown plants. Avoid persistent winter waterlogging.
