Delosperma nubigenum Desert Dancers® Red (‘FSDD2112’), selected in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, from a species originating in South Africa and Lesotho, is commonly known as hardy ice plant. This cultivar differs from conventional delospermas through its seasonally changing pink, purple-red and dark green foliage, compact branching habit and abundant red flowers produced over an extended period.

Delosperma nubigenum Desert Dancers® Red is an evergreen succulent perennial with short internodes and densely branched, creeping stems. Its cylindrical, fleshy leaves display green and pink tones in late winter and early spring, becoming dark green with purple shades during summer before developing red-purple colouring later in the season. The compact vegetation forms a low, regular mound. From May to October, numerous daisy-like red flowers with contrasting yellow centres open in bright sunlight. The cultivar tolerates high temperatures and periods of dry soil once established, but requires a sharply drained root zone to withstand winter conditions successfully.

The low, spreading growth of Delosperma nubigenum Desert Dancers® Red is suitable for rock gardens, sunny borders, raised beds, dry slopes and the joints of stone paving. It can also be installed above retaining walls, where the succulent stems form a short cascade. Its compact habit and changing foliage colours provide additional interest in patio containers, troughs, window boxes and hanging baskets. On suitable roofs, it may be used in planting systems designed for shallow-rooted succulents, provided that substrate depth, drainage and local structural requirements are assessed beforehand. Combine it with sedums, sempervivums, dianthus or other plants requiring similarly dry conditions.

Plant Delosperma nubigenum Desert Dancers® Red in spring, in full sun and in light, stony or sandy soil with rapid drainage. In heavy ground, raise the planting level and incorporate coarse mineral material to prevent water from remaining around the roots. Space plants approximately 25 to 30 cm apart. Water regularly during establishment, allowing the soil surface to dry between applications. Once rooted, irrigate mainly during prolonged dry periods; container-grown plants require more frequent monitoring. Avoid excessive fertilisation, which can produce soft growth. No systematic pruning is required, although damaged stems and faded flowers may be removed. Protect plants from persistent winter moisture and severe frost.
