Characteristics of Citrus × junos (Yuzu)

Citrus × junos, commonly known as Yuzu, is thought to be a hybrid between Citrus ichangensis and Citrus reticulata. Unlike most citrus species, it shows outstanding frost resistance, enduring temperatures as low as -10 °C. It forms a dense, shrubby plant often bearing thorns. The evergreen foliage is aromatic, releasing citrus notes when crushed. The plant produces medium-sized yellow fruits in autumn, highly valued for their intense and complex aroma blending lemon, mandarin, and grapefruit tones. Flowering occurs in early spring with small white blossoms.

How to use Citrus × junos (Yuzu) ?

Yuzu can be grown in open ground in mild winter areas or in containers in colder climates. It is ideal for edible landscaping, agroecological orchards, or as an ornamental citrus thanks to its fragrant foliage and unusual cold hardiness. The fruits are in high demand in the culinary and food industries, used in sauces, dressings, desserts, and beverages. Its zest is particularly prized for aroma extraction and gourmet applications. The plant is also suitable for permaculture and low-input orchard systems.

Best practices for growing Citrus × junos (Yuzu)

Plant Yuzu in well-drained, light soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Choose a sheltered location protected from cold winds if planting in the ground. Spacing between plants should be 3 to 4 meters. Water regularly during the establishment phase and mulch to conserve moisture. Prune lightly to remove dead wood and maintain a balanced structure. When grown in containers, use a citrus-specific substrate and repot every 2–3 years. Apply organic or balanced fertilizer in spring and summer to support fruit production. Avoid waterlogging to prevent root diseases.
