DELOSPERMA cooperi Violet Wonder ®

Native to southern Africa, Delosperma cooperi Violet Wonder®, commonly known as hardy ice plant, is a succulent ground-cover perennial valued for its low-growing habit and deep violet flowers. It differs from pink- or orange-flowered Delosperma varieties through its intense violet colouring. Its fleshy foliage and spreading growth make it particularly suitable for sunny rock gardens, borders, slopes and container planting.

Characteristics of Delosperma cooperi Violet Wonder®

Delosperma cooperi Violet Wonder® forms a low-growing plant approximately 15 cm high and 40 cm wide. Its green, narrow and fleshy leaves are typical of Delosperma and help the plant tolerate periods of limited water availability once the root system is established. Flowering consists of numerous deep violet, daisy-like blooms that open mainly under strong light. In suitable growing conditions, flowering continues from spring through to late summer. This perennial performs best in warm, sunny positions. Its resistance to cold depends greatly on effective drainage, particularly during winter.

How to use Delosperma cooperi Violet Wonder®?

Thanks to its spreading habit, Delosperma cooperi Violet Wonder® is well suited to rock gardens, borders, dry slopes and the front of mixed beds. It can also be planted at the top of low walls, where its stems can gradually trail over the edge, or between stones where sufficient growing medium is available. Its low height makes it easy to combine with sedums, sempervivums, compact ornamental grasses and other perennials adapted to well-drained soils. It is also suitable for pots, troughs and window boxes. For an even ground-cover effect, group planting helps maximise the visual impact of its intense violet flowering.

What are the best cultivation tips for Delosperma cooperi Violet Wonder®?

Plant Delosperma cooperi Violet Wonder® in full sun in light, very well-drained soil. In heavy soils, improving drainage is particularly important to limit standing moisture during winter. Space plants approximately 35 to 40 cm apart. Water regularly after planting to encourage root establishment, then reduce watering once the plant is well established. Occasional watering may still be required during prolonged dry periods, especially in containers. Pruning is generally limited to removing dry or damaged growth. A moderate application of fertiliser in spring is usually sufficient; avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowering.
