Characteristics of Salvia nemorosa Dark Matter®

Salvia nemorosa Dark Matter®, originating from European breeding programs, delivers an eye-catching bloom display with dense, compact flower spikes of intense dark violet. Its low, bushy habit (30–40 cm high) makes it especially suitable for the front of borders or for container planting. The grey-green, aromatic foliage complements the floral display. Flowering begins in May and can continue into autumn with proper deadheading. Extremely hardy and drought-tolerant, this cultivar performs well even in poor or rocky soils.

How to use Salvia nemorosa Dark Matter®?

Salvia nemorosa Dark Matter® is well-suited for use in the front of mixed borders, rock gardens, dry landscapes, or ornamental containers. Its compact and tidy structure makes it ideal for urban or public landscape projects with maintenance constraints. It pairs well with low-growing perennials such as hardy Geraniums, Achillea, or Nepeta, as well as ornamental grasses. When mass-planted, it provides strong visual impact and continuous seasonal interest in well-designed planting schemes.

Cultivation guidelines for Salvia nemorosa Dark Matter®

To successfully grow Salvia nemorosa Dark Matter®, plant in well-drained, light soils, even those that are poor or stony. Full sun is essential to achieve rich flowering and dense growth. Space plants 25 to 30 cm apart to allow proper air circulation and root development. Remove spent flower spikes promptly to encourage a second flush of blooms. Watering should be limited—this variety is highly drought-tolerant once established. Light surface hoeing and a small amount of compost in spring will maintain plant vigour throughout the season.
