The characteristics of Yucca × French Flag®

Yucca × French Flag is a French‑bred cultivar from 2016, resulting from the cross between Yucca filamentosa and Yucca rostrata. It inherits the glaucous-blue foliage and cold hardiness of Yucca rostrata, combined with the flexible, broader leaf texture and quicker flowering of Yucca. The nearly non‑prickly foliage distinguishes it from other yuccas, with reduced risk during handling. Owning a compact spherical shape (~1 m across) atop a developing trunk (to ~1.5 m), it grows faster than typical tree‑yuccas, initiating bloom within a few years of planting.

How to use Yucca × French Flag® ?

Yucca × French Flag® is versatile in ornamental design: ideal in full‑sun borders, mixed rockeries, massifs, or container culture on terraces or patios. In-ground planting suits arid foregrounds or structured Mediterranean and dry gardens, while large containers offer mobility and drainage control in wetter climates. It functions well as a vertical focal point, singular specimen, or in groups for a sculptural effect. Its compact crown and manageable trunk height make it safe and striking in public or residential settings.

Quels conseils pour réussir la culture du Yucca × French Flag®?

Plant Yucca × French Flag® in spring (March–May) or autumn (September–October) in well‑drained soil; it tolerates poor, sandy, calcareous, even clayey substrates, but soil must drain well to avoid root rot in winter. Maintain planting distance of roughly 1 m per plant in massing. Avoid waterlogging; humidity tolerance is better than parent species, but still limited. Minimal pruning required—remove spent flower stems and dead leaves as needed. Fertilization is not essential if soil is moderately fertile; growth is robust on lean, alkaline soils. Water lightly during establishment and growing season; once established, it is drought tolerant. Routine inspection for pests is sufficient, disease resistance is high.
