SALVIA sclarea

Sauge Sclarée / Sauge Musquée

Salvia sclarea, native to southern Europe and western Asia, is a biennial to short-lived perennial valued for its spectacular flowering display and high aromatic potential. More vigorous and architectural than common culinary sages, it is distinguished by its large, decorative coloured bracts and strong upright habit. Characteristics of Salvia sclarea

Salvia sclarea belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is characterised by strong vigour and a two-stage growth cycle, forming a basal rosette in the first year followed by an impressive flowering display in the second. Its large, textured leaves are rich in essential oils and release a distinctive musky fragrance. Tall flowering spikes, enhanced by showy bracts, provide outstanding ornamental value. Highly melliferous and nectar-rich, this species plays an important role in supporting pollinators. It demonstrates excellent tolerance to drought and poor soils, making it well suited to extensive and low-input cultivation systems.

How to use Salvia sclarea ?

Salvia sclarea/Clary sage is particularly suited to naturalistic plantings, dry gardens, flowering meadows and Mediterranean-style landscapes. Its vertical structure and graphic inflorescences bring rhythm and height to planting designs. It is also widely used in aromatic and medicinal crop production, as well as in cut-flower and dried-flower cultivation. In landscape and urban projects, it performs well in the background of borders or as a focal plant in mass plantings. Its value is simultaneously ornamental, aromatic and ecological.

Cultivating practices for Salvia sclarea

Plant in light, well-drained soils, including poor or calcareous substrates. Heavy or waterlogged soils should be avoided, particularly during winter. A planting distance of 40–60 cm is recommended to allow proper rosette development. Once established, watering requirements are low, as the plant tolerates drought conditions well. Pruning is not essential, but removing spent flower stems can help limit self-seeding. Fertiliser inputs should remain minimal; excessive nutrition promotes leaf growth at the expense of flowering and aromatic concentration.
