Plant description
Dierama pulcherrimum, nicknamed “Angel's Fishing Rod,” is a highly ornamental herbaceous perennial that captivates with its elegant silhouette. Its narrow tuft of linear, soft green foliage is reminiscent of grasses. In summer, long, flexible, slender and arched flower stems rise above the foliage and bear a multitude of pendulous bells in shades ranging from soft pink to deep mauve. Flowering generally lasts from June to August. This plant reaches a mature height of approximately 1.20 to 1.50 m with a spread of about 60 cm. Hardy to -10°C/-12°C in well-drained soil, it surpasses smaller varieties with its graceful stature and abundant flowering. It brings a unique lightness to flower beds and natural gardens. Its supple habit and airy flowering distinguish it from other summer perennials.
Uses in the garden or on the terrace
Dierama pulcherrimum is ideal for natural, contemporary, or prairie-style gardens. It can be planted at the back of a border, where its flexible stems add movement, or on its own to highlight its graceful silhouette. It pairs beautifully with grasses, gauras, or other light summer-flowering perennials. At the edge of a pond or water feature, it enhances the natural effect with its stems swaying in the wind. It is also suitable for large containers or deep pots on a sunny terrace. In mild climates, it can be incorporated into low-maintenance gardens due to its low water requirements and long life. Its charm also works well in urban environments in dry or mineral gardens. A plant with great ornamental potential to bring verticality and grace.
Care and growing tips
Dierama pulcherrimum prefers well-drained, even dry soil and does not tolerate standing water, especially in winter. Plant it in light, sandy, or stony soil in a sunny location. Leave a distance of 40 to 60 cm between plants to encourage clump development. Once established, it tolerates drought well. Watering is only necessary during prolonged periods of drought, especially in the first year after planting. Avoid dividing or moving the plant, as it hates being disturbed. No strict pruning is required: at the end of winter, you can simply cut off the faded flower stems and clean up the dry leaves. Add a little mature compost in the spring to stimulate flowering. Mineral mulch can be useful for keeping the crown dry. In cold climates, good drainage and winter protection (mulch) are recommended. An easy plant once established.
Origin of the plant
Native to the mountains of South Africa, Dierama pulcherrimum grows naturally in high-altitude grasslands, where it benefits from well-drained soil and a temperate climate.
