Characteristics of Salvia uliginosa African Sky

Native to South American wetlands, Salvia uliginosa African Sky offers striking, sky-blue tubular blooms carried on tall, wiry stems throughout the second half of the growing season. Its bright green foliage is lance-shaped and slightly serrated. Flowering begins in mid-summer and continues into autumn, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. This fast-growing cultivar forms an airy clump and can reach over 1.5 metres in optimal conditions. It brings strong verticality and lightness to planting schemes and is particularly valuable for its late blooming and wildlife support.

How to use Salvia uliginosa African Sky ?

Salvia uliginosa African Sky is ideal for use in naturalistic borders, prairie-style plantings, wetland edges, or behind mixed perennial beds. Its height and airy texture make it a perfect choice for adding movement and vertical structure late in the season. It pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses and other late-flowering species such as Rudbeckia, Helenium, or Persicaria. It can also be used in light, informal screens or as a background plant in mixed schemes. In semi-shaded or moisture-retentive soils, it thrives with minimal intervention, making it suitable for both domestic and public landscape projects.

Cultivation guidelines for Salvia uliginosa African Sky

Prefers moist, well-drained soils. Adaptable to sandy, silty, or clay-loam soils as long as they do not stay waterlogged. Salvia uliginosa African Sky performs well in both sunny and lightly shaded locations. Best planted in spring after the last frost. Space plants about 40–50 cm apart to accommodate mature spread. Water regularly during establishment and in prolonged drought. Remove spent flower spikes to extend blooming and tidy the plant. In cold regions, mulch the base in autumn to protect roots. Can spread via underground runners. Provide sufficient space or control spread where needed. Cut back dry stems in late autumn or early spring to promote healthy regrowth.
