Features of Salvia x Amethyst Lips®

Salvia x Amethyst Lips® is a hybrid sage from the Lamiaceae family, recognized for its distinctive bicolored blooms—purple and white—displayed on upright stems. This semi-evergreen shrub reaches approximately 1 m high and wide, forming a dense, rounded mound ideal for ornamental use. Flowering lasts from early summer through late autumn, offering continuous visual interest and strong nectar production for bees and butterflies. Foliage is aromatic and fine-textured. The plant tolerates drought and thrives in well-drained soils. Its moderate hardiness allows survival down to –10/–12 °C with protection, making it suitable for mild to temperate climates.

How to Use Salvia x Amethyst Lips®

This sage performs exceptionally well in full-sun borders, mixed perennial beds, low informal hedges, and dry gardens. Its compact, structured growth and continuous flowering also make it ideal for containers and raised beds. In wildlife gardens, it serves as a magnet for pollinators, supporting biodiversity. Its Mediterranean aesthetic fits perfectly into xeriscaping and low-maintenance schemes. Group planting (three or more) enhances its visual impact in mass displays. 'Amethyst Lips' can also complement gravel gardens, courtyard designs, or be used as a seasonal accent in urban landscaping.

Cultivation Guidelines for Salvia x Amethyst Lips®

Prefers well-drained, light to medium soil. Avoid heavy clay. Full sun is essential for best flowering. Space 40–60 cm apart to allow airflow and balanced growth. Add grit or sand to improve drainage in heavy soils. Once established, water sparingly. In containers, water more regularly. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring for optimal blooming. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage reblooming. Light pruning in early spring maintains shape and vigor. In colder regions, ensure good drainage and provide mulch or frost protection during prolonged cold. Shelter from harsh winter winds is recommended.
